︎La invención del papel
In September 2022, Gerardo Naumann was summoned by the Malba's Literature Department to prepare a performance for it to be premiered as part of an event called "La fiesta de la lectura" ("Reading Party”) , which was held on February 14, 2023. The fee offered by the institution ($150,000) accounted for one third of what is stipulated in the fee schedule drawn up by "Artistas autoconvocades" and other groups. This fee schedule is endorsed by the majority of the artistic community. Faced with the museum's refusal to negotiate, Gerardo still decided to accept it and, in the performance, he reported what had occurred. At the end, he offered the audience to take a part of the total fee he was payed, and encouraged people to use the money -if they wanted- to buy "La invención de Morel" ("The Invention of Morel) by Adolfo Bioy Casares, a book that permeated the whole text of the performance. The museum authorities, in disagreement with the content of Gerardo’s proposal, decided not to show the performance.
On this page you will find a link to the complete text of the performance that the museum removed from the program, another link to the fee schedule and a third link to the draft law.
The fee schedule guarantees the possibility that artistic practices such as lectures, "talks", performances, etc. can be carried out professionally, seeking to balance the current scenario in which only institutions are favored nowadays, since they are able to offer content in exchange for meager fees.
The visual arts draft law -the fee schedule is attached to it- promotes the creation of an institution that will allow the community to rethink the role of the artist, establishing guidelines for the funding of projects that, currently, do not have space within artistic practices -educational projects, community projects and those carried out in dialogue with others-.
